Personal History

Hello,
My name is Rob Newport and I grew up and live in Faribault, MN. I guess you could say that I got my started in motorsports from my father racing/riding snowmobile in the winters and drag racing cars in the summer at a young age. Around the age of twelve I received my first motorcycle (Gemini 80!) from my grandparents that owned a junkyard. I was lucky to have the junkyard growing up because I was able to ride motorcycles that people would bring in to sell. I started raced BMX in my teens until my early 20’s and started racing mx around the age of 18. A couple of friends talked me into going to an open practice at Millville one weekend and that opened my eyes to a new world. Back in the day you could ride a practice session at Millville all day with no stops for grooming or separate classes. Needless to say I did ride all day and could barely walk the next few days. I started racing mx every weekend and went to A class in 2 years. I learned how to cross train on mountain/road bikes from a local road racer/bike store owner. To this day we still go for road rides together to get away from the everyday routine. I had my fair share of broken bones racing mx over the years and around 2001 I started to enjoy mtb more and more. I did a few races and ended up winning the Sport Class that year. I was still riding mx but was focusing on mtb in 2002 and raced the whole series and won Comp Class. I turned Expert in 2003 and was placing in the top 10 at races but was also putting in a lot of saddle time on the bikes and wasn’t riding mx as much as I would have liked. For the next few years I did a few local races on mtb /mx and was enjoying life a little more without the pressure of racing every weekend. Around the year 2006 I started doing some hare scrambles and have the best of both worlds, racing xc in the woods and riding my motorcycle doing it. Since 2006 I’ve taken 2nd overall in Vet A two years (2008, 2009), 2nd overall in Open A (2010), 1st overall in Open A (2011), 3rd overall in Open A (2012), and 3rd overall in Open A (2013).

I have a very supportive family with my wife Jill and two kids Isaac (11) and Aubrie (5). Isaac raced BMX for a couple of years and has been riding motorcycle since the age of 4. This will be Isaac’s third year of racing with me and will be moving up to Premier class on his KX 85.  Aubrie has taken over her brothers CRF 50 and loves to ride but we are waiting for a few more years like her brother did before she starts racing.  Jill loves to cook, go camping and hanging out with family and friends. She rides a TTR-125 during our trail rides.

Riding Goals

Racing a full season in 2014 and making AA in D23 Hare Scrambles. I have been training more this year and had good results with the races I have made it too. With winter season almost here I plan to contuine training and racing this winter on the ice to be ready when the snow melt and the 2014 season starts.
