Personal History
I am writing this on behalf of my 15yr old son, Mason Brashear #984. He has been racing a little less than 2 yrs. After his first pit bike race on a 4-stroke 80cc bike, we moved him to a KX85. He blossomed quickly, but we quickly ran into bike woes. His bike was down for 6 months, and during that, I bought his “next” bike which was a 2013 KTM 150SX. It was still pretty tall for him and needed help starting it and starting blocks. His first race ever on this bike, there was 28 on the gate with 19 in his class. He was the smallest out there by far....with his starting blocks. He purposely laid back on the start and went into the turn next to last. About the same on moto 2. He worked his way through the pack and ended up 8th overall for the day on his first ever race on a big bike.
Earlier this summer, we hooked up with Trampas Parker and got him into his motocross school. He came back and looked VERY good! Mason also learned how important fitness is. He has an exercise bike and a row machine that he does workouts on many days each week. He does this without being told. Mason also wants to go back next year to spend more time training under Trampas and we will send him there too.
In April of this year, I let him race a vintage race at Diamond Don's AHRMA national. He went 2-1 for 1st overall on my 1979 CR125 (pictured below).
Starts have been his biggest hurdle and mainly due to committing. That said, his very last race in the 450 class, he raced his other bike (2013 KTM 250SX), and he managed back to back holeshots. His best finish overall in modern bike racing is 3rd overall in a night race and that was on his 150 SX.
Despite nearly racing for 2 yrs, he had a lot of down-time with his KX85. We have that remedied now with 2 bikes that are his and at least one will always be ready to race.
Below are some pictures of Mason and his bike(s)
Thanks for your time!
