Personal History
I'm Luke Mellema, when I was little I was always getting into trouble. A guy called Tim Koetje was fixing our roof and my Dad was talking to him. He said, "Why don't you get him a dirt bike to keep him outta trouble." So my Dad got me a 50 cc Baja and I started to ride. Then my Dad built me a ramp and I started jumping. I said to myself, "I'm going to land the jump wide open." I got whiskey throttle and crashed in to my Dad's old truck. There is a dent with the handle bars and a huge dent from my body on that truck. So we started to race at Hannegan, our local track and I took 5th place. Then I took 1rst place at every race after that with that Baja. I rode with rubber farm boots, a used helmet and jeans that year. I borrowed goggles and gloves from somebody too. It was the last race, I was sad that I didn't have enough points to get a big trophy. Then when that night was over my Dad said, "Just kick their ass next time."
Riding Goals
My riding goal is to make it to Loretta Lynn's on my stock 65 and 85 bikes this year. I went to Hangtown in the 65 class for the regional Loretta Lynn qualifier last year in 2014. I was running 7th then I crashed and took 10th. I felt like I rode good that time. If we made it to Loretta Lynn's it would be expensive. I like that people are willing to give sponsorships to help me ride and help me make my goal. It means a lot that people are willing to do this for kids.
Competitive Highlights
I placed 3rd at a 2014 Loretta Lynn qualifier in Horn Rapids, WA on my 65 and I placed 4th on my 85 at the same race . From that I got to go to the regional qualifier in Hangtown, CA this year.
I took the Red Bull Triple at Panic Rev 2014 in Washougal on my 85.
I won the P R O series for Northwest Washington on my 65 in 2014.
I took first place on my 85 at Top Gun 2013 in Washougal, WA. That was the 3rd time I rode that bike.
