Personal History

My name is Gavin Hazen.  I am 15 and live in Robinson, Texas.

I was born and raised in a rural part of Maine. My love of dirt bikes started in the fall of 2016 when I bought an 09’ Honda 150F.  I rode it often in the woods behind my grandparents home.  But the ice and snow would keep me off my bike for 6 months at a time.

When my family moved to Texas in the spring of 2017, I was excited for the ability to ride year-round and the opportunity to ride at real tracks.  My dad and I rebuilt a 99 Kawasaki KX125 on the kitchen table so I could have a bike to race.

I purchased a membership at Waco Eagles track in Riesel because it was the closest to my house.  I would practice as much as my parents could get me there.  Often several times a week.  I watched and studied other riders and tried to mimic their techniques.  Because I was practicing so much, we had a difficult time keeping my bike going and knew it was time for an upgrade.

In June of 2018, my parents gave me a 17’ Husqvarna TC125. This is the bike that I race now.  I started at smaller races at the Waco Eagles track and then jumped into the deep end by joining the Full Moon Series in the fall of 2018.

I did pretty well considering that I had not had any formal training and felt that I was making progress with each track I went to.

In August 2018, at a race at Oakhill MX, I came over a roller, and started to loose my balance.  I put my foot down to save myself and broke 4 bones in my right foot and fractured my kneecap.   After using my downtime to condition my body and study, I signed up for some training at the MX Factory in Austin.  Tyler Livesay and especially, Cody Haverfield were monumental in my development as a rider.

The training helped me to be more in control, thus safer and more confident in my abilities to ride and win.  I certainly look forward to doing more training with them.

Although still in my first year as an AMA beginner, I know this is all I want to do.  I’m so thankful for the sacrifices my parents make so that I can pursue my dream of being a pro.  I am willing to put in the work and am always looking for ways to learn and improve.
