SPEED RACER: Indian Land kid competes nationally INDIAN LAND -- Most 7-year-old boys won't turn down the offer of a soda or candy, but Christopher Venditti is no ordinary 7-year-old.Venditti, a second-grader at Indian Land Elementary School, spent the summer training for the Amateur National Motocross Championship. As part of his training, Venditti voluntarily gave up sugar and sodas and spent every morning and evening racing and training with his dad, Chris Venditti."He did it all on his own," his father says. "He just wanted to win."Each summer morning began with a 20-minute run and a 40-minute bike ride. In the evening, Venditti would ride again.His hard work paid off. During the first week in August, he competed in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, against the nation's top amateur motocross racers in the 4-to 6-year-old age group. He won a gold medal in his first race, but problems with his bike led to disappointing finishes in his second and third race.Still, Venditti finished eighth overall out of 42 racers in his class."We're thrilled with eighth place," Chris Venditti says. "But he should have won overall. He worked so hard."Venditti's interest in racing began when he was 2-years-old and saw pictures of his dad racing motocross bikes. He asked his parents for a bike of his own, but they waited until he was almost 5 before they bought him his first bike for Christmas.Venditti was hooked immediately and has taken to the sport like a seasoned pro.He entered his first national championship last year, finishing 14th. This year's eighth-place finish is just incentive for him to keep up the hard work and try again next year, his parents say.Safety is one of the family's biggest concerns.
