Personal History
My name is Brandon King and I love motocross. I grew up in Asheville, North Carolina. I've always loved dirt bikes ever since I was a little kid. My father could never afford one, and my mother didn't want me to ride for fear of getting hurt. Unfortunately I wasn't able to start riding until I could afford the sport on my own. After high school I attended two years of college, and then at the age of 21 I joined the United States Air Force. It was at that time that I was able to finally start riding dirt bikes. This was the year 2010. I was stationed in Anchorage, AK and this is where I started riding. I rode mostly at the local track, every once in a while I would ride trails but mostly I just enjoy track riding. My first season was spent mostly just learning how to creep my way around a track without getting stuck in ruts and loose dirt, and the very beginnings of how to jump. My first season also included my first broken bone, and the onset of doubt about how dedicated I was. While I was injured I wasn't sure if I was going to ride again or not. I sold my 1997 CR250 for $1300 and decided I would just put the money towards a car instead. Come that next winter I found a deal I just couldn't pass up. It was a craigslist bike, a 2010 KX450f for $5500. I jumped on it immediately and never looked back. The first day that the track opened; and on my new bike, I was able to clear every jump on the track that I couldn't clear the season before. That day was all it took for me to be forever hooked. I've now been riding and racing ever since that season. I've won motos, I've cleared jumps I would have never imagined I could jump, I've doubled, tripled, drug bars through the dirt and I can't imagine a better way to spend my time than on my dirt bike.
Riding Goals
I just moved to C class this season. My goals are to just keep progressing. I focus more on my technique than I do on trying to be fast. I figure that if I develop my technique and learn all I can, then the speed will come. I am starting to learn to scrub and whip, and a very specific skill I've been working on is not looking down in ruts, rather, keeping my eyes ahead on the track. Also, keeping my toes pointed in and focusing a lot of effort on squeezing the bike and relaxing my hands.
Competitive Highlights
My first ever race was a highlight for me. My very first moto EVER I stalled on the gate, stalled in the second corner, and went down in the third corner. It was a rough lap. I ended up fighting back to 4th place. I holeshot my second moto. I won a handful of motos in the Anchorage Racing Club and a few overalls. I was never able to compete for points because of my work schedule. My first season racing in Georgia I won my first two overalls with a 1-1 in both weekends.
